Schooner Gallery features contemporary fine art in Downeast Maine.
Schooner Gallery opened in May 2011 and features contemporary fine art. The gallery is located at 59 Main Street in the town of Milbridge in what was known in the mid-1800s as the “Captain Brown home.” The building was renovated inside and out to create bright and open space for exhibiting works of art.
Visitors from both far and locally have given generous compliments for the art shows that have been offered since opening. Schooner Gallery has been described as one of the best small art galleries in the Downeast region of Maine.
In addition to art shows exhibiting works by talented Maine artists, Schooner Gallery has a gift shop with select Maine-made products as well as visitor information about local businesses and attractions.

10th Annual Narraguagus Jr/Sr High School Student Art Exhibit
Schooner Gallery’s 2025 summer season began on May 9th with the 10th Annual Narraguagus Jr/Sr High School Student Art Exhibit. This art show featured works by NHS students who have been developing their skills and talents in the Capstone, Honors, and Advanced Art classes during the 2024-2025 school year. We are excited to have this art show for young, emerging artists, who displayed a variety of pieces, some created following a prompt from their teacher and some from each student's own experience and creativity. The show runs May 9th, 2025, through May 29th, 2025.
An Artists' Reception was held on Friday, May 9th, from 4pm to 6pm.
2025 "44º North" Open Art Show
Our 14th Annual "44º North" Downeast Open Art Show opened on June 13th, and ran through July 14th. This exciting and inspiring annual event featured artworks by a number of Maine artists who live within 44 nautical miles of Milbridge. Artists of many ages and levels training each exhibited two recent pieces.
An Artists' Reception was held on Friday, June 13th, from 4pm to 6pm.
New at the Schooner Gallery Gift Shop...
Some changes are underway this year for the gift shop at Schooner Gallery. The selection of gift items and daily operation will be done by the Rising Tides Downeast Artisan Collective. The Collective expects to keep the gallery open through October. They will also organize and run several art shows in the Gallery after the 44º North Open Art Show closes.
Fred Hartman's colorful drawings of birds and other Maine creatures, as well as scenes of the Downeast coast, have brought enjoyment to many people. His artworks are done in pen & ink and watercolor, or in pencil and watercolor, and are very detailed in their depiction of wildlife. Fred is a retired Professional Wildlife Biologist (BS-Penn State University, MS-University of Maine at Orono) and has been associated with Maine for over 45 years. His years of work as a Wildlife Biologist has enabled him to put the right detail in his wildlife art.
